All the diarrhea of the mouth people that believe an NFL team must draft a first round quarterback to win a Super Bowl or believe Cassel can’t go to a Super Bowl because of arm strength this is for you. In addition this will prove to all the Matt Cassel haters that Cassel can get the Chiefs a playoff win or take them to a Super Bowl.
(Matt Cassel’s 2010 Highlight video has been taking down for some reason. But the above video kicks ass and will show Cassel can throw 50 yard bomb passes and 30 yard zip passes easily)
I’m going to be all alone on this one, but I’m optimist Chiefs guy that believes Cassel can get us a playoff win and maybe a Super Bowl appearance.
Matt Cassel has been nothing but a loyal soldier wherever he has landed. USC promised Cassel the starting job, but he was passed over and still stayed with the team without bitching. He was a professional behind Brady and especially when he was given the starting nod. Matt always had respect for Brady saying it was still Tom’s job. He dealt with paranoid, rip your ass a new one on the field, head coach Todd Haley for 3 years. Never once did Matt talk bad about Haley to the press. He still hasn’t said anything to the press and now Haley’s fair game to be thrown under the bus.
Matt has been nothing but loyal to the fans, KC community, and the Chiefs organization for crying out loud the guy helped save a KC family from a house fire.
Why was everyone so in love with Trent Green and everyone dislikes Matt Cassel? They are both family men, good with the press, good team mates, and work their asses off, they are the same guy except Green ran a well oiled offense. As a person, I do not see how people dog this guy all the time besides the fact that he’s a California prettyboy. (Check out this piece comparing Cassel and Green and how similar they are, even Adam Tiecher from the KC Star says Cassel has a stronger arm then Cassel)
Now lets address the real issue everyone has with Matt Cassel. The real issue is no one believes Matt is an elite QB in the NFL that can win a playoff game and he can’t get the Chiefs to the Super Bowl because he has a weak arm even though Joe Montana who won 4 Super Bowls had one of the weakest arms in the NFL. Well, Cassel may not be an elite QB since there are only 5-6 of them, but this is a revolving door because just a year ago sports radio guys were mocking Eli Manning for saying he’s not one of the best NFL QBs and now those same radio guys are sucking Eli’s balls for winning 2 Super Bowl. These are the same guys that sucked off Phillip Rivers as an elite QB before last year, but are now loading the shotgun for Rivers to off himself because he sucks. This elite QB thing is always changing.
Matt Cassel is not an elite QB and won’t be until he goes to 2 Super Bowls. Cassel could be one of the top game manager’s in the NFL that could lead the Chiefs to their first playoff win in 19 years (even though Chiefs have had 3 second round home playoff games in that time) or could lead them to a Super Bowl.
For people to get a real understanding lets start going through all the game managing Super Bowl quarterbacks from the time when Chiefs became relevant again-1990. You will be shocked to see what QBs fall into the game manager status. Game manager status is around 25 TDs and less then 4,000 yards passing. Well 13 Super Bowl quarterbacks that are not hall of famers fall into that since 1990. Here is the list with all their stats…
Matt Cassel- No Super Bowl appearance yet
Jeff Hosteler- 1991 Super Bowl- Had the 8th best rushing and Best overall defense
Mark Rypien- 1992 Super Bowl- Had 7th best rushing and 2nd best defense
Stan Humphries- 1995 Super Bowl- Had 7th best rushing and 9th best defense
Neil O’Donnel- 1996 Super Bowl- Had 12th best rushing and 9th best defense
Drew Bledsoe- 1997 Super Bowl- Had 26th rushing and 14th best defense
Chris Chandler- 1999 Super Bowl- Had 6th best rushing and 4th best defense
Steve McNair- 2000 Super Bowl- Had 13th best rushing and 15th best defense
Kerry Collins- 2001 Super Bowl- Had 11th best rushing and 5th best defense
Trent Dilfer- 2001 Super Bowl- Had 5th best rushing and 1st best defense
Brad Johnson- 2003 Super Bowl- Had 27th best rushing and 1st best defense
Jake Delhomme- 2004 Super Bowl- Had 7th best rushing and 10th best defense
Matt Hasselbeck- 2006 Super Bowl- Had 3rd best rushing and 7th best defense
Rex Grossman- 2007 Super Bowl- Had 15th best rushing and 3rd best defense
Super Bowl Hall of Fame or soon to be quarterbacks that were game managers for their Super Bowl years.
Troy Aikman- Super Bowl 93, 94, 96- I’m not looking it up we all know they had the best Oline, Emmit Smith, and Deon Sanders
Ben Roethlesburger- Super Bowl 2006- Had 5th best rushing and 4th best defense
Tom Brady- Super Bowl 2001- Had 26th best rushing and 17th best defense (QB stats match up with game manager but not rushing and defense)
Eli Manning- Super Bowl 2008 – Had 19th best rushing and 17th best defense (QB stats match up with game manager stats but not rushing and defense)
Eli Manning-3200/21TD’s/10pics
Roethlisberger’s 1st SB season – 2400/17/9. Roethlisberger’s 2nd SB season – 3300/17/15.
Brady’s 1st SB season – 2800/18/12. Brady’s 2nd SB season – 3600/23/12
None of those guys put up monster QB numbers. Statistically, all of them had a weaker season than not only Cassel’s 2010 season, but also his 2008 season. I don’t understand why everyone wants to throw in the towel on this guy. Look at his first three complete, full-time seasons in the league:
2008: 3,700 yards, 21 TD, 11 pics
2010: 3,200 yards, 27 TD, 7 picsCompare those with your boy Drew
2003: 2,100 yards, 11 TD, 15 pics (only played in 11 games, so we’ll look at 4 seasons)
2004: 3,100 yards, 27 TD, 7 pics
2005: 3,500 yards, 24 TD, 15 pics
Super Bowl matchups- A list of all Super Bowls
I know that is alot of information to digest but when you look at it. You’ll notice there is about a 50% chance that a game manager type of quarterback will make it to the Super Bowl by having a top 10 defense and a top 10 rushing offense.
Last year the Super Bowl was a couple plays away from having 2 game managers (Flacco-Baltimore, Smith-49ers) making the Super Bowl but instead the elite QBs (Manning-Giants, Brady-Pats) made it despite Brady’s horrible play in the playoff game. One reason its harder for the game manager with good running and defense to make it all the way to the Super Bowl is because of the new rules helping wide receivers. Less hits on wide receivers, quarterbacks and more penalty calls on defenses has allowed for a stronger passing game putting more emphasis on the quarterback.
History proves that doesn’t mean it can’t be done the old fashion way of game manager, top 10 rushing and top 10 defense to get to the Super Bowl. That is why the Chiefs can make it to the Super Bowl because they can do that this year if the cards fall correctly.
Bill Maplewood provided stats and helped write this piece

Your man love for Cassel is admirable but also a bordering the need for a restraining order.
Comparing him to Aikman, Brady, Montana, etc. is just plain nuts. I understand you are only looking at their statistics but there are many unmeasurables in a great QB that go beyond plain stats. Please don’t ever do that again as it is embarassing. You can’t lump a guy into that class who hasn’t ever even won a playoff game. That’s a bit over the top.
Great write up overall though and I’m on board that he could lead us to another AFC West title but ONLY if we get back to having one of the top 5 rushing offenses in the NFL. I don’t think Cassel should throw the ball more than 30 times in any game this year.
I’m going to try VERY hard to not be a hater on Cassel this year but we will have to wait to see him play before I can hold true to that promise.
Love you CHEEEEEEEEESE
YOu can tell Coach participated because they were referred to as “the Chiefs” and not just “Chiefs”.
What do you mean Coach participated?
Sorry Coach, I meant Maplewood or anyone for that matter.
Cassel is a decent back up QB. He’s not an elite starter and he’s not going to morph into one bc he has some talent around him. He still looks uncomfortable in the pocket and still can’t find an open receiver. Manning looks really good and so do the Broncos WRs and the Broncos will win the West despite having a tough schedule. I have zero faith in Pioli. I’m done with Cassel and the hope that he turns from a caterpillar into a butterfly. Let’s face the facts, Cassel is a disgusting hairy worm and will always be a disgusting hairy worm and nothing else. The Chiefs suck, RAC sucks like he sucked in Cleveland, Pioli sucks, Poe sucks (Junior Siavii part deux), Clark Hunt is cheap and sucks, Quin sucks, Stanzi sucks, McCluster sucks and should have been cut and our best player is STILL our punter…who’s starting to suck. I hate being a Chiefs fan. The Broncos did it right, they got the best QB of all time and went out and got a 6’8″ stud with a rocket arm. Before the Seahawks traded Jackson, all 3 of their QBs were better than Cassel. Expect more posts like this until Pioli’s fat ass is on a bus back to the Northeast. Chiefs suck. I’ll be at the home opener and I will have the brown grocery bag with eye holes cut out ready for the second qtr.
LERF- With all due respect, that post sounded as if it was a fire bal of pessimism. Cassel is not a ‘decent back up QB’. Cassel made the pro bowl a couple years ago. I do agree Manning looks good. He’s always dangerous! I do have faith in Pioli and truly believe he has built a very good football team.
Cassel is not an elite quarterback. However, he does a nice job when given a solid game plan suited to his traits and abilities. Cassel can make all the throws needed to win football games. His questionable accuracy has been large part due to his mediocre footwork. I believe Zorn will get this polished up this season. I expect a much more accurate season out of Cassel. Dontari Poe does not suck, and will become a godo NFL interior Defensive Lineman. Dexter McCluster should not have been cut, and is a big part of this team. He’s clearly an NFL talent.
This team has a very good coaching staff, and is weak at no positions. We don’t have many superstars…although, I expect Eric Berry to become one this season. This is a very balanced team, who has a good shot at winning the West.
Well said LERF. There is room on the Orange wagon if you want on board.
LERF I hope your dead wrong, but when the season does go to hell I you say, Can I borrow your noose when your finished with it?
You can borrow my grocery sack. I probably wont be going to many games after the Falcons come in and give us a good lube-less raping, so I probably won’t need it after week 1. Can’t wait to see either an injured Flowers or a crappy Jalil Brown (great use of a 4th round pick by a great GM, although, he is better than Javier Arenas…a 2nd round pick and another fantastic draft pick by a fantastic “draft-day” GM)try to cover either White or Jones.
“Back up the truck! Back it up! Turn this place into a parking lot.” -Randy Quaid, Major League 2
Nothing like beating this dead horse again. If we don’t run the ball 35+ times per game and our defense doesn’t get healthy, it won’t matter if 1980′s Joe Montana is our qb because we won’t sniff the playoffs.
Defense wins championships!
The old famous ‘tape trick’. This tape is slightly sped up….making all the players appear a bit quicker, and making the ball seem a bit more on a ‘zip’ out of Cassel’s hand.
Let me be clear: I am a Matt Cassel fan. Do I think he’s a top 10 quarterback in the league? No, I’d say he’s in the 15-17 range. But, I just wanted to point out that this tape is definitely sped up. A lot of recruits did this in their videos they sent in…it’s incredibly obvious.
Chiefs Defeat the Falcons by 3.
And, yes…Cassel can absolutely take us to the SuperBowl.
Maybe in New England backing up Brady
Or as a starting QB for your Kansas City Chiefssss!!!
Good write up Cheeeese. I believe that Cassel’s surrounding cast has to be elite in order for him to be an effective NFL quarterback. The problem for us is that Pioli is not a good evaluator of talent. With the exception of Eric Berry he has little to show for his drafts while he has been here in Kansas City.
I’m really praying at this point that after the first pre-season game we have put the clamps down on the offense in the hope of not revealing too much of the playbook. I’m also hoping that we’ve played vanilla defense as well. Romeo is known for devising a different defensive gameplan for each game to count the strengths of an opposing offense.
I just have a terrible feeling about the opener against Atlanta. The natives will be restless if the Chiefs come out and embarrass themselves in Arrowhead. Let’s hope we get focused and improve before September 9th!
Cheeese, we all want Cassel to become awesome and lead the Chiefs to a SB. He for sure has been dicked over by all the coaching changes especially psycho Todd Hailey.
But I don’t think you can compare his 2010 season to those Super Bowl QB’s of the 90′s & early 2000′s – it was a different league back then. You gotta have an accurate, strong armed guy in the pocket to go deep in the playoffs these days and Cassel just hasn’t shown he fits that mold.
Also kind of of a stretch to compare guys like Aikman, Eli, Brady, Brees to 2010 Cassel. How fuckin’ good did all those guys get once they were in their mid-20′s with a Super Bowl ring? Nonetheless, I hope Cassel proves all the doubters wrong.
And the greatest of them all, JOHN ELWAY. Btw, anyone see Manning yesterday. Oh shit. Stevo, put the crack pipe down son.
