US Open Update

We have made it through the first two rounds of the US Open and only 3 players are under par.  Tied for first are Tiger, Furyk, and Toms with Tiger and Furyk in the last group teeing off at 5:05 PM Central.  Remember this tournament is being held on the West coast so we get prime-time golf in the Midwest and on the East coast.

The top two ranked golfers in Donald and McIlroy missed the cut as well as Masters champion Bubba Watson.  This is now a four man tournament in my opinion: Tiger, Furyk, Toms, and McDowell all former major winners are the top four names on the leaderboard.  The winning score I still say will be PAR because the course is expected to be more difficult on the weekend after playing to a stroke average of 74.5 the first two days.  It’s just too hard for players to make up strokes because there aren’t a lot of birdie opportunities on this course.

If history is any guide Tiger is favored to win this tournament given he has won 8 times in 9 tries when leading or tied for the 36 hole lead in a major.  Is this the weekend he breaks through after going 16 majors without a victory?  Who do you think wins and give me a score?

Tiger chokes again, told you Bear and the rest that said it was a lock he would win. Tiger still does not have his MOJO and won’t until he can admit his game has flaws, #arrogantafterlosing

Furyk had a Tom Watson British Open ending, made the tournament but loss

Good for Simpson on the win but come on NBC and Simpson get a better celebration going when the guy wins. The Sonic cheeseburger winners at Royals games are more entertaining then that scene

Cheeeese, I don’t recall saying Tiger was a “lock” to win. Just said he had a great chance. If you research, you’ll read that those that have played with Tiger lately said he’s playing like Tiger of old. Golf is fickle. If one thing is off then your entire game is fucked. Tiger didn’t “choke”, just couldn’t keep everything together on the weekend. Choking is playing in the final pairing on Sunday, getting tested, and snap-hooking your drive into the woods on #16 (Furyk) – huuuuge choke job and he at 42yrs does not deserve to be compared to then 59yr old Watson of 2009.

Man, how long have you been stoking your clubs and thinking about Tiger? I had no idea about your man crush on him. I can be more supportive, its not the Jayturds…

Would watering the course give Tiger a better shot at making a cumback? He could get more riskaahh with his shots, better chance at some birdies???

Also what nationality is Furyk or what country does he represent? I’ve seen Germany and American flags next to his names?

I’d love to see teenieebop Hossler make a run at this thing. It would make for one hell of a story and the kid already has the body/posture of a 40 old golfer out there…classic

    • Watering the course makes everything softer and slower thus making the course easier for everyone. I am of the mindset that a sunday setup at tge us open should be the hardest round of golf these play all year.
Furyk is as american as a 20 piece chicken mcnugget. He is also the most vanilla player on tour, so i’d rather not see him win, but he is steady as the come and has a very good chance .

Well AW, you can forget the non-watering of the course prior to the final round. They’re most certainly going to soften the course overnight since it was a solid 82 degree day in NoCal.

Oh, and per usual, the USGA pulls a dumb-ass, quirky stunt as it tweeks the #15 par-3 into a dinky 108yd hole for Saturday. This really fucked with the players on Saturday and NBC can thank the USGA on Sunday when the ratings take a tiny tumble.

Tiger needs to regain his 1st & 2nd round mojo for Merica to bring it home. I’m not really confident in the other home-teamers to defeat McDowell or the other pudgy Brits.

    • Throwing out the Tiger in contention=ratings spike, do you think us opens where the pros struggle to break par get better ratings than something like last year at Congressional where the winning score looked like something out of the Quad Cities Open?
I’m sure i could find some kind of stat on this, but it’s too late for me to care enough to find it. I know personally i lost interest last year with the course being such a pushover.

I also think it’s best when the players struggle to make par but as long as there are “name” players at the top. Last year was a little different – no Tiger at all, weakend course with rain led to low scores, and Rory dominated which carried the ratings. Without Rory I probably would not have watched the last round.

I really want Tiger to win. However, if a non-American has to win I would want McDowell as he’s my favorite Brit.

    • I would like for tiger to make run, but would love to see mcdowell, westwood, or els win it. As for americans, i’d also love to see dufner make a run, and of course i have a soft spot for the high schooler. What an incredible story that would be.
I felt like there was the potential out there today to put up a good score, so i hope the usga doesnt put any water on the course tonight to make the final round a serious challenge with par being a truly great score.

  5. It’s going to be a great weekend of golf. The olympic club is one of the best tests you’ll see for a US Open while still being considered “fair” by the players. Some of those fairways are no wider than about 15 yards in spots and the greens are tiny, so accuracy is going to be so key. Both Toms and Furyk have the type of accuracy needed to win here, which is why the top of the leaderboard looks like it could be from 1999.
    +2 wins this tournament.
